There are so many possibilities for creation when it comes to paper mache and they are all fun and easy to do. With the right tools, materials, and some time, you can make some paper mache at home and today I’ll show you how to make a lovely paper mache bowl. So to get this made you will need some Elmer’s glue, water, paper strips and a balloon. I have already blown my balloon up. I’ll be using this as a mold and I used a little bit of masking tape to stick it to this bowl creating a base to keep the balloon from moving around too much. This will make it much easier to make the shell. I’ll also use a paint brush for brushing on my adhesive which is made of a 4:1 ratio of glue and water.
So let’s get out our strips of newspaper. What you’ll need to do is take your paint brush and dip it into the adhesive then paint one side of the newspaper strip, flip it over and paint the other. You should have a nice thin layer of the adhesive and you can then stick it to the top of the balloon to start creating your bowl. Use your paintbrush again to brush out any of the air bubbles. You’ll need to have a lot of patience because it will often get air bubbly and starts to pop up so this is one of those projects you need to take some time on and stay calm. Now let’s do that again and brush some adhesive on one side of a strip and then the other and stick it on in a different direction from the first. I prefer starting my strips in the center and then build them outward. Ultimately there isn’t any specific method and you can add your strips in any way you like. Depending on the depth of your bowl I like to go about 2 thirds of the way down the balloon in terms of how deep I want my bowl to be. Build up about two to three layers of adhesive covered strips. Don’t make it any thicker than that because it takes a long time to dry. It should be dry in two or three hours but I usually let my paper mache dry over night before adding on any more layers.
About 6 to 8 layers in total are recommended for a strong bowl but it depends on what you want and what you’re planning on using the bowl for. The 6 to 8 layers is great for making a candy dish and if you are doing this and making something to put little objects into you need to make sure they are wrapped candy because these bowls are not food safe. We are going to be painting them and they are not dishwasher safe, these bowls are just decorative. So we will just continue to add the newspaper strips on but what’s cool is that you don’t even need to use newspaper. This can be a great green project and you can use old computer paper, craft paper or whatever paper you like to make the bowl. Your molds can even be things that you find around your house which is another reason why it’s such green project. It’s just a great way to recycle old paper and make something new in your own home. It’s great to do with kids also because it’s just gluing and adhering. Kids love to get their fingers sticky and this will certainly help them do that.
